Open ended counselling services are designed to help you to explore and work through problems at a more gradual, less structured and relaxed pace. Although weekly or fortnightly sessions have become the accepted norm for many counsellors, you may choose to set your own frequency for these in response to changes in your personal circumstances or preferences. Lasting an hour, each session provides a supportive, non-judgmental environment where you can explore your thoughts and feelings, gaining insights into your behaviour and ways of being, while developing strategies to help you to manage any presenting issues.
Short term (Otherwise referred to as time limited) counselling is inclined to be more structured both within each session as an overall piece of work. Whereas open ended counselling tends to delve into the past, supporting self understanding of how past experiences may influence present actions, short term counselling typically focuses on current life challenges aiming to enhance your present circumstances. This may include issues such as social anxiety, stress management or difficulties relating to self esteem.
The conventional aim of single session counselling is to support you in navigating a particular predetermined obstacle to wellbeing. This would see us establishing and agreeing on a firm focus for the work ahead of time so as to make the best use of the time available. This is done with the understanding that additional sessions can be made available to you if you decide this is necessary. In addition, a single session may take the form of a disclosure session, wherein you may wish to discuss something you feel otherwise unable to talk about, in a safe and confidential space. Alternatively you may opt for a holding session offering interim help before you decide whether to proceed with longer term work or in the absence of immediate availability.
Trauma informed counselling looks at how trauma effects a person's wellbeing and shapes their ability to cope. It is a Biopsychosocial model, meaning it takes a holistic approach, considering how biology, psychology and social factors can collectively influence a person's mental health. Sometimes referred as simply Trauma Therapy, it utilises this framework to help understand and address the interplay between these elements in support of effective counselling outcomes. Although some people may already be all too aware of having unresolved traumas, others may have some without having named them as such. This service offers the appropriate space in which to explore your distress regardless of how you may prefer to frame it.
